educational programsA very important part of a Professional School Counselor's job is collaboration. This collaboration does not only pertain to administrators and teachers within the building, but with parents and guardians as well. Below are some ideas for how to get the communication flowing between the school counselor and parents:
*Create a Newsletter - this can be sent out monthly, either through the mail or via the internet. It is important to think about how to best reach all of the parents when sending this out. *Keep your section of the school website updated - parents can easily go here to check out what you are doing for your school and how you are helping their students. *Keep a community resource guide on your website - sometimes parents are not sure where to turn to for help and may be too afraid to ask in person. This could be a great way to connect those parents to resources in the community that can help them. *Host multiple parent nights - This gives parents the chance to come in an meet you and ask questions in person. This can be especially helpful for those parents who work all day and cannot meet you during regular school hours. *Be present! - Make sure you are visible when parents are around (i.e. drop-off and pick-up, parent/teacher conferences, back to school night, etc.). When the parents see your smiling face around, they are more likely to know who you are and ask for help when they need it! |
